Before the miniseries, this picture was the only thing I knew about Moon Knight: Pretty freaking badass right?
Now we have yet another superhero in the Marvel blockbuster franchise and Oscar Isaac staring as the knight himself. Moon Knight is interesting as he has dissociative identity disorder, formally known as multiple personality disorder. This disorder is something I have had a particular interest in for about two years now and am using it as inspiration for my NanoWriMo story. I have also read that Issac, the amazing actor he is, has done his own research about the disorder for the role. Episode 1: This first episode we're introduced to Steven Grant: a British guy who works at a museum gift shop. It's displayed early on that Grant is pretty much a loser and has nothing going for his life besides his job. He does however have a sleep disorder and is plagued with blackouts that negate any chance of getting his life together in shambles. That is until one blackout he wakes up in a whole other country. This episode has a lot of mystery and confusion around it. The writing doesn't hold your hand and answer any of your questions either. It expects the audience to watch and wait as Grant is pulled into one mystery and then the next. I can really appreciate that because most Marvel media has the audience spoon-fed explanations before they become any type of mystery. I can also appreciate the MC being a complete and utter loser. Many Marvel characters are pariahs of society because of a dark past, Grant is just a mild-mannered doofus who has no idea what is going. Episode 2: Now we are given some answers. In a very slow, clumsy way very much in Grant's style. We're introduced to Marc Spector, an identity inside of the body that is an avatar of Khonshu, and Layla, Spector's wife who is completely unaware that Spector has DID or Grant's existence. Then we have Harrow, the main bad guy, who was Khonshu's avatar before Spector but now is an avatar of Ammit. Honestly I agree with Grant that he is a "very dodgy bloke" but for Marvel villains his pretty ok. He doesn't seem that threatening but I guess future episodes will show his true power. Episode 3: This episode becomes a bit messy when the fighting starts happening (as most Marvel TV shows are known for at this point) but it offered some insight onto Moon Knight's DID. As Spector is trying to gain intel on Harrow's group in Cairo, not only does he fight for control of the body with Grant, but other identities as well. It makes me wonder if Spector, the original host of the DID system, create Grant as a way to deal with living alone in Britain for so long. So now they're both hosts of the body with other identities fronting and running around at inconvenient times. Again, not much to go on so this is just my speculation. Another great thing about this episode was the internal banter between Spector and Grant. Just like real identities in a DID system they absolutely hate each other's guts and must find a way to work around that. It also goes to show that Oscar Isaac's acting is as gorgeous as ever. Plus him being a fine as fiddle doesn't hurt either. ;) Can't wait for next week's episode!
